Ways you might use these literacties:
- English (Literacy: Texts in Context)(ACARA, 2014a): ask students to write down notes from the video. Prompt some questions, what would be the important information you need? dates? explorer names?
Get your higher able students to also write down one little 'fun fact' about each explorer. - English (Literature)(ACARA, 2014a): After allowing the students to develop some background knowledge about a certain explorer, get them to write a response to what they have learnt. Lower ability: what would have been the struggles of such exploration? what would have been the positives? (great chance to touch upon Bloom Taxonomy's thinking hats!). Higher ability: write a diary entry as if they were the explorer about to make their renowned exploration.
- Mathematics (Measurement and Geography: Location and transformation)(ACARA, 2014d):Give the students a map of Australia along with a explorers travels (this can also be done with in-land explorers mentioned in The picture history of Great Explorers) and mark on the map where they had traveled. Using a scale on the map, ask the students to investigate the distance the explorer had covered.
